NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Southern Vermont College was downed 3-0 by Smith College Thursday night in non-conference women's volleyball action at Ainsworth Gymnasium.

The Pioneers took the sweep with set scores of 25-10, 25-10, and 25-15.

Next up for Southern Vermont (0-11) is a non-conference tri-match at SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday; the Mountaineers will take on Lancaster Bible College at 1 p.m. before playing the hosting Fighting Tigers at 3 p.m.

SVC junior captain Liv Sowles (Sacramento, Calif.) led the team with eight kills while adding a team-best 16 digs. Sophomore Sarah Billow (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) chipped in with three kills and eight digs as classmate Abigail Landon (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) had 11 assists and a pair of digs in the effort.

A Sowles kill early in the first made it a 3-1 Mountaineer upper hand, but Smith came back with a 7-1 run for a lead it would not relinquish. After Sowles landed an ace, the Pioneers scored eight unanswered to stake a comfortable advantage they would carry to the 1-0 edge on the night.

Smith rattled off eight straight in the onset of the second game before Sowles ended the run with a kill. The hosts would continue to score points to make it a double-digit separation, and they would take the final four points of the frame to go on top 2-0 in the match.

A pair of Sowles kills and an ace from Bennington College freshman Kemly Derby (New York City, N.Y.) put SVC ahead 5-1 to open up the third set. Smith would come back to tie it at 6-6, and 11-straight points by the hosts gave them a commanding upper hand. Billow and Sowles each recorded a kill to cut into the deficit, but it wasn't enough as the Pioneers closed out the night.
