Women's Volleyball Takes Down Castleton (3-1), Lyndon State (3-2) to Sweep CSC Tri-Match

CASTLETON, Vt. – Southern Vermont College senior Jessica Delgado (Los Angeles, California) recorded 55 kills in eight sets Sunday, leading the Mountaineers to a 3-1 win over Castleton State College and then a 3-2 victory against Lyndon State College in a non-conference women's volleyball tri-match at CSC.

The wins pull SVC above .500 for the season as the Mountaineers improve to 4-3 on the year after their third win in a row. Castleton moves to 3-6 after beating the Hornets while Lyndon falls to 2-7 on the season with the days' losses.


Southern Vermont 3, Castleton 1

SVC dropped the opening set 25-23 to the Spartans, but the Mountaineers then battled back with 25-21, 25-22, and 25-22 straight-game victories to take the match.

Delgado put down 30 kills in the day's opening win, only recording four attacking errors on 69 attempts for a .377 percentage; she also tied the match-high of 23 digs with teammate sophomore Brin Goldman (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) who chipped in with nine kills and four service aces.

Southern Vermont sophomore setter Sheilani Kaleopa (Riverside, California) was instrumental in all aspects of the offense, assisting on 35 of the 47 SVC kills, putting down 10 kills and serving up six aces; she also notched nine digs in the win. Senior Alexandra Sinicropi (Fultonville, New York) racked up 18 digs and added four service aces to her line.

Castleton junior Amanda Chambers (Lake George, New York) tallied a team-best 15 kills and chipped in defensively with 15 digs. Sophomore Kristi Lawless (Fort Montgomery, New York) led the team with 18 digs in the match.

The Mountaineers' second contest of the day was no easy win with the first set being extended until a 32-30 SVC victory. Southern Vermont took the next frame 25-22 before the Hornets kept their hopes alive with a 25-18 third-set win. Lyndon pushed it to a deciding fifth with a 25-20 tally in the fourth, but SVC closed out the day by winning the last game 15-13.

Delgado closed out her day with 25 kills and only one attacking error on 71 swings (.338 hitting percentage) in the win against Lyndon State, popping up 18 digs and putting five service aces across the net. Sinicropi followed in kills with eight and tallied a team-best 21 digs, 13 assists and six aces in the effort.

Goldman accounted for 22 assists and 16 digs for the Mountaineers, and sophomore rookie Emily Lesure (Cheshire, Massachusetts) added 14 digs for the victors.

Hornet sophomore Abbey Greene (Exeter, Rhode Island) led her team with 16 kills and added eight digs to her line. Classmate Kelleigh Murtagh (Merrimack, New Hampshire) posted a match-high 22 digs and added eight kills in the loss.


The Mountaineers try to keep their win streak alive with a Wednesday meeting at Norwich University scheduled for 6 p.m.
