Women's Volleyball Goes 1-3 at Skidmore Inv., Healis Named to All-Tournament Team

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Southern Vermont College women's volleyball team participated in the Skidmore Invitational on Friday night and Saturday afternoon, going 1-3 in the tournament. 

The Mountaineers (21-6 overall, 7-0 NECC) dropped the first two matches of the weekend, losing to New Paltz State and then Skidmore, both by 3-0 scores.  They split day two with a 3-0 win over Baruch College and a 3-2 loss to Union College.  New Paltz went 4-0 on the weekend and Skidmore was 3-1. Baruch and Union were both 1-3.

Senior captain Danielle Healis (Escondido, Calif.) was named to the All-Tournament team with her .402 hitting percentage on 37 kills and only four errors.  Corinne Palmer and Mallory Mendelsohn of Skidmore were also named to the All-Tournament Team, while Marissa King of New Paltz was named Tournament MVP. Rounding out the team was New Paltz's Dana Vosilla, Rebecca Peralta of Baruch and Marissa Vollmer of Union.

The Mountaineers are right back in action on Sunday when they celebrate Senior Day at SVC with a 1 p.m. match against New England Collegiate Conference opponent Lesley University.

 

New Paltz def. Southern Vermont 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-16)

New Paltz improved to 28-7 with a three-set win over Southern Vermont. Michelle Jacobson had a double-double with 12 digs and 11 kills, while Dana Vosilla added seven kills and two blocks and Marissa King finished with 25 assists. Senior Jessica Alvarez (Los Angeles, Calif.) had seven kills and 10 digs for the Mountaineers.

 

Skidmore def Southern Vermont 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-14)

Against Skidmore, SVC was lead by 13 digs from senior Vivian Delgado (Los Angeles, Calif.), 14 assists from junior Carrie Baltazar (Whittier, Calif.) and 11 assists from freshman Sheilani Kaleopa (Riverside, Calif.). Healis added eight kills. Thoroughbreds' Carolyn Bottelier posted a double-double with 13 digs and 11 kills at a .625 hitting percentage to go along with four blocks. Corinne Palmer added 16 kills at a .500 hitting percentage and five blocks, while Mallory Mendelsohn chipped in with 37 assists and seven digs.

 

Southern Vermont def. Baruch 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-17)

The Mountaineers picked up their first win of the weekend while Baruch closed out its weekend with a 1-3 mark. For Southern Vermont, Healis finished with 13 kills and two blocks, while Jessica Alvarez added 13 kills, nine digs and four aces and Delgado chipped in with 19 digs. For the Bearcats, Melinda Santiago had 18 assists to go along with 12 kills and five digs from Lauren Hayden and 12 digs and eight kills from Jessica Wu.

 

Union def. Southern Vermont 3-2 (25-22, 25-19, 18-25, 23-25, 15-11)

After taking a 2-0 lead, Union held on for a 3-2 victory in the final match of the 2012 Skidmore Invitational. For the Mountaineers, Healis had 12 kills and four blocks to go along with 15 kills, two blocks and two aces from senior Ashily Veliz (Los Angeles, Calif.). Baltazar added 50 assists, 11 digs and five kills for Southern Vermont.
