Women's Volleyball Wins Both at Norwich Tri-Match, 3-0 Over NU and Maine Maritime

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Southern Vermont College women's volleyball team won both of its matches Sunday as the Mountaineers knocked of Maine Maritime Academy and the hosting Norwich University Cadets.

                SVC won both matches by a 3-0 tally, while Maine Maritime took down Norwich to begin the tri-match, 3-2.

                With today's results, Southern Vermont improves to 12-1 on the season, Maine Maritime improves to 7-7 and Norwich falls to 6-8 overall.

                In the second match of the day, the Mountaineers defeated MMA by scores of 25-21, 25-14, and 25-17. Senior outside hitter Jessica Alvarez (Los Angeles, Calif.) led the Mountaineers against the Mariners with a match-high 15 kills.

                 Alvarez also added three service aces and seven digs in her first match of the day. Carrie Baltazar (Whittier, Calif.) had a team-high 17 assists and libero Cindyline Sevilla (Los Angeles, Calif.) posted a match-high 14 digs.

                 The Mariners were led by Sydney Robertson (Barnstead, N.H.) with a team-high five kills. Jennifer Dixon (Woodstock, Md.) dished out eight assists for Maine Maritime, and Molly Marcotte (Seekonk, Mass.)  recorded a team-best seven digs.

                  In the nightcap, Southern Vermont beat Norwich for the second time this year with game scores of 25-17, 25-9, and 25-18.

                  Freshman Sarah Graham (Moreno Valley, Calif.) posted a match-high 10 kills, committing only two errors on 15 attempts for a .533 hitting percentage. Baltazar totaled 18 assists, while Sevilla led the Mountaineers' defense with 11 digs.

                  The Cadets were led by Haley Vermes (Westborough, Mass.) with seven kills. Tara Lyons (Pocasset, Mass.) and Alex Palmer (South Windsor, Conn.) added eight digs each for Norwich, and Lyons also added three blocks.

                   The day started with Maine Maritime coming back from two sets down to beat Norwich by scores of 22-25, 25-27, 25-22, 25-21, and 15-13.  Lyons led the Cadets' offense with a season-high 13 kills.  The Mariners were led by Ariel Knights (Brookton, Maine) with 12 kills.

                   The Mountaineers return to New England Collegiate Conference action with a 7 p.m. match at home on Tuesday versus Becker College.  The Cadets next host Rivier on Wednesday at 7 p.m., and Maine Maritime has a week off with its next match scheduled for October 9th at 6 p.m. when the Mariners host Bowdoin.
