CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Southern Vermont College started its 2017 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's soccer schedule Saturday night at Edwards Field, but the Mountaineers fell 2-0 to Lesley University in the league tilt.
The hosting Lynx scored twice in the first half, including a goal in the 45th minute, before maintaining their advantage through the second period to finish off the shutout.
The Mountaineers (2-4, 0-1 NECC) now turn back to non-conference action for a 1 p.m. game against SUNY Canton next Saturday, September 23—a match at Everett Field which will serve as SVC's true home opener. The team's contest scheduled for Tuesday, September 19 against Clark University has been cancelled.
Southern Vermont senior goalie Melissa Mascari (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) made eight saves in Saturday's loss (2-4).
Lesley took a 15-4 upper hand in shots during the night while taking five corners to the Mountaineers' two.
Play was scoreless until the 33rd minute when LU capitalized on a corner kick for the go-ahead tally. The Lynx then got an insurance goal to go with just 35 seconds left in the opening frame on a second-chance opportunity and a 2-0 halftime lead. Neither team would get into the back of the net through the final 45 minutes for Lesley to start the NECC campaign with a win.
