HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Southern Vermont College dropped a tightly-defended, non-conference women's soccer match at Juniata College Saturday evening as the Mountaineers were bested 1-0 at Gibbel Stadium.
The Eagles got on the scoreboard in the 47th minute with—what proved to be—the only goal of the game. SVC nearly tied it in the final minutes as two takes rang off the posts before the apparent equalizer was headed home; a foul would be called on the Mountaineers, however, for the goal to be negated and give Juniata the chance to run out the clock.
Up next for Southern Vermont (0-2) is a Wednesday night match against Lyndon State College which serves as the finale for the Manchester College Soccer Series at Applejack Stadium (7pm).
JC put nine shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes, but SVC senior keeper Melissa Mascari (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) was able to turn them all away for the game to go scoreless into the break.
The Eagles would go on top quickly out of the halftime to give themselves the upper hand. That 1-0 edge was maintained over the next 40 minutes before the visitors felt the pressure of the clock.
With time waning, Southern Vermont started to push with possession late in the game. A throw-in deep down the right touchline gave the Mountaineers a chance in the box, and two attempts at the tie went off the pipes. SVC crashed the box and looked to have found the back of the net, but a visitor foul made way for the score to be called off with just minutes to go.
Mascari (0-2) ended the night with 15 saves in the effort.
