Women?s Soccer Drops Season Opener 1-0 in Double Overtime at Altoona

ALTOONA, Pa. – Southern Vermont College was dealt a tough loss to begin the 2017 regular season Friday afternoon as the Mountaineers were clipped 1-0 in double overtime during non-conference women's soccer action at Penn State Altoona.

Neither side could find the back of the net through the opening 110 minutes of the year as the match went into its second extra period. Just 1:04 into that stanza, however, the Lions tucked one inside the right post to take the victory at Spring Run Stadium.

The Mountaineers (0-1) finish their season-opening trip to the Keystone State Saturday evening when they visit Juniata College for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff.

Southern Vermont took a 4-3 edge in shots on goal during the first half, but the Lions came back to tally a 4-2 upper hand in takes on frame during the final 45 minutes of regulation. The Mountaineers got off the only shot on net during the first overtime, but it would be turned away to keep the game scoreless.

Altoona then put one on target early into the second overtime—a take that resulted in a rebound and a second chance that the hosts capitalized on for the win.

Four Mountaineers made the Lion keeper do some work between the pipes by getting shots on net—sophomores Taylor Mallett (Berwick, Maine) and Dani Biggers (Broadablin, N.Y.) each registering a pair.

SVC senior goalie Melissa Mascari (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) finished the afternoon with 10 saves in the loss (0-1).
