LONGMEADOW, Mass. – Southern Vermont College was able to pull out a 10-9 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's lacrosse victory over Bay Path University Tuesday evening at Ryan Field.
The Mountaineers trailed 4-3 at halftime but came back to tie it in the second period. Scoring went back-and-forth with the Wildcats holding a 9-7 upper hand at the 12:10 mark, but the rest was all SVC as the visitors score three unanswered goals to pull ahead and hold on for the win.
Southern Vermont (2-9, 2-3 NECC) has one final match on the regular season schedule with the Mountaineers hosting Mitchell College on Saturday for Senior Day and a 2:30 p.m. NECC showdown.
SVC sophomore Alex Safford (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) potted seven goals while freshman Brittany Fulton (Bridgeport, Conn.) had a goal and an assist. Freshman Julia LaFiora (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored once in addition to chalking up a game-best four draw controls, and senior Vanessa Kendall (Coventry, Conn.) notched a goal and three draw controls in the win.
Mountaineer senior keeper Sydnee Julian (Mexico, N.Y.) tallied eight saves in the win (2-9).
LaFiora put SVC on the board first with her second goal of the year, but BPU answered with a 3-1 run to take the upper hand. Safford netted her second of the day with 57 seconds left in the opening period—only to have the hosts take the edge 14 ticks before the halftime horn.
Scoring went back-and-forth in the second stanza until Bay Path netted two consecutive tallies for the 9-7 upper hand. After Safford beat the Wildcat keeper, however, Fulton sent home her fifth of the season to tie things with 8:23 left to play. Safford then put her 24th goal of the year into the back of the cage with just over six minutes left to go, and the Mountaineers were able to hold on to the slim upper hand for the important league victory.
