Women’s Lacrosse Starts NECC Action With 20-1 Loss at Becker

LEICESTER, Mass. – Southern Vermont College began its New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's lacrosse schedule Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field—falling 20-1 to Becker College.

The Hawks pulled away towards the end of the first half to bring a 12-1 lead into the break, and they kept SVC scoreless in the second period for the sizable victory.

The Mountaineers (0-7, 0-1 NECC) are next in action on Saturday, April 13th with their home opener against Dean College; first draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Southern Vermont sophomore Alex Safford (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) scored a goal while adding two caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls to her line. Senior Naya Cerda (West Islip, N.Y.) had a team-best five caused turnovers in addition to three ground balls, and freshman Marisa Moy (Framingham, Mass.) tallied two ground balls and a team-high four draw controls.

SVC senior goaltender Sydnee Julian (Mexico, N.Y.) made nine saves in the loss (0-7), and she scooped up five ground balls on the day.

Safford potted her seventh goal of the year on a free-position shot—tying the game at 1-1 just 4:07 into the match. The rest would be all Becker, however, as the hosts cruised to their seventh win of the year.

The Hawks registered 11 unanswered goals before the intermission, and they outscored SVC 8-0 through the final 30 minutes to improve their Conference record to 2-0.
