Women’s Lacrosse Falls 15-2 During Inner-state Showdown at Norwich

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Southern Vermont College women's lacrosse team fell 15-2 at Norwich University Monday night in a non-conference tilt at Sabine Field.

The Cadets ran out to a 9-0 lead by halftime and held SVC off the scoreboard until the final nine minutes of action.

The Mountaineers (0-6) now turn their attention to Saturday for their New England Collegiate Conference opener—a 1 p.m. first draw at Becker College.

Southern Vermont sophomore Alex Safford (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) had a goal in addition to leading the team with three draw controls and three caused turnovers; she also had three ground balls in the effort. Classmate Meghan Arthur (Billerica, Mass.) posted her first collegiate goal while senior Madi Carr (Petersham, Mass.) collected a team-high four ground balls.

SVC senior goalie Sydnee Julian (Mexico, N.Y.) made 15 saves in the loss (0-6), and she also scooped up a pair of ground balls on the night.

Norwich was able to put one home in the first minute of play, and the hosts were off and running after that. They sent in the eventual game winner at the 24:46 mark of the first, and NU would then go on top 8-0 by the midway point of the period.

The Cadets continued to pad their cushion through the second half to keep the clock running and put the game out of SVC's reach. The Mountaineers kept pushing to end the shutout, however, and they would get two past the Norwich keeper late in the contest. Safford took a pass from senior Aubrey Vierstra (Saugerties, N.Y.) and fired in her sixth goal of the year, and Arthur would get on the scoresheet about two minutes later with an unassisted tally.
