PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Southern Vermont College was downed 14-2 Sunday night by Rhode Island College in a non-conference women's lacrosse contest at Alumni Field.
RIC scored the first five goals of the game before bringing a 6-1 lead into the break. The Anchorwomen then outscored SVC by seven in the final 30 minutes to walk out with the win.
The Mountaineers (0-5) are next scheduled to host SUNY Maritime on Saturday for a 1 p.m. home opener at Everett Field.
SVC sophomore Alex Safford (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) had a goal in addition to team-highs of five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Freshman Marisa Moy (Framingham, Mass.) had the other Mountaineer goal while notching three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers, and senior Madi Carr (Petersham, Mass.) posted three ground balls and three caused turnovers in the effort.
Southern Vermont senior goalie Sydnee Julian (Mexico, N.Y.) made 11 saves in the loss (0-5), and she also collected five ground balls on the night.
RIC had a 4-0 lead by the 21:02 mark of the first half, and the Anchorwomen maintained that upper hand through the next 10 minutes. SVC got on the board when Moy buried her second goal of the year with 5:47 to go, but Rhode Island answered with 12 seconds left to bring a 6-1 advantage into halftime.
After the hosts got the first goal of the second period, Safford took a pass from senior Aubrey Vierstra (Saugerties, N.Y.) and beat the RIC keeper for her fifth score of the season. The rest would be all Rhode Island, however, as the Anchorwomen closed out the contest with seven unanswered goals for the comfortable victory.
