GRAND LAKE, Co. – The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) announced on Monday its 2018 Academic Honor Squads and Academic Honor Roll with Southern Vermont College appearing on both lists.

SVC garnered its second-straight team award while senior Kelsey Carrera (Queensbury, N.Y.) and junior Stephany Ferreira (Shelton, Conn.) made their way to the Division III Academic Honor Roll.

For a team to be decorated as an Academic Honor Squad, the crew must post a collective grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the academic year. In 2017-18, the Mountaineers combined to chalk up a 3.40. A total of 339 teams across NCAA Division I, II, III, and the NAIA received the 2018 laurel with SVC and Elms College being the only two squads from the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) to pick it up.

Recently-retired Mountaineer head coach Thomas L. Otero said, "Once again, we are honored to have our Southern Vermont College women's lacrosse team awarded as an IWLCA Honor Squad. We constantly strive to balance work and play with our programs—emphasizing the value of both. I am so proud our team has been able to do so the last couple of years; it's a great reflection on our players, our faculty, and our program."

To be eligible for the individual accolade, a player must be a junior, senior, or graduate student and post a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher at the end of the spring semester. A total of 639 Division III student-athletes were recognized on the 2018 list—representing 189 DIII institutions. Carrera and Ferreira were among 11 players from the NECC who earned the decoration.

"Our two individuals' awards also represent a great work ethic on the part of both of these student-athletes," Otero said. "Stephany and Kelsey have carried above-average class loads and have excelled in the academics—as well as on the athletic field. Their achievements are a great reflection for the College and them individually; I could not be more proud to have been their coach."

Carrera received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in May, and Ferreira is on track to complete her coursework for her bachelor's degree in Business Administration – Healthcare Management this upcoming December after studying abroad during the fall semester.
