BENNINGTON, Vt. — The New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) announced its weekly award winners for the period ending December 13, 2015 with Southern Vermont College senior Amber Flagg (Windsor, Conn.) taking home the NECC Women's Basketball Player of the Week honor.
Flagg set two Southern Vermont scoring records in the same night, helping SVC to its first win against New England College in 13 all-time meetings between the Mountaineers and Pilgrims (89-84 in overtime on Tuesday, December 8 at Southern Vermont). She entered the game needing 12 points to break SVC's all-time scoring record of 1,492, and the captain achieved that in just the first 8:13 of action as she registered 13 points in the opening quarter. She would go on to score 40 points for the night, topping the team's previous single game record of 38. That put her up to 1,521 career points, making her just the second Mountaineer from either the women's or men's team to surpass the 1,500 mark.
The senior captain was 15-15 at the line, eight of those baskets coming in the final 1:19 of overtime to help keep SVC in front and hold off NEC from making a comeback with the foul game. She was also 5-9 from three-point range while pulling down four rebounds and dishing out seven assists. Flagg added two steals and a block to her line in the win, playing 43 minutes as she was forced to leave the court only briefly for an injury stoppage.
This is her second Player of the Week award this season after picking it up on November 23, and it is the fourth time in her career that she has collected the Conference's top weekly laurel.
Flagg and the Mountaineers are off until January 4, resuming play with non-conference action at Mass. College of Liberal Arts.
