MILTON, Mass. – Playing in the consolation game of the Curry College Tip-off Tournament, the Southern Vermont College women's basketball teams lost to St. John Fisher College 70-17 Saturday afternoon.
In the first meeting between the two since 1998-99, the Cardinals (1-1) opened with a 14-2 run in the first five minutes, giving them a cushion the Mountaineers (0-2) would not be able to get past. Multiple St. John Fisher players got in on the scoring action as Southern Vermont found itself down 33-8 at the break. Sophomore Claire Walsh (Binghamton, N.Y.) led the Cardinals with 10 points off the bench while junior Brooke Seavitt (Oro Valley, Ariz.) added another eight in the opening period.
The second half saw much of the same as St. John Fisher continued to be efficient from the floor, shooting 43.8 percent on the day. Senior Camaryn Buckner (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) put up a team-high eight points in the stanza as the Cardinals continued on to the 70-17 victory.
Mountaineer sophomore Javasha White (Schenectady, N.Y.) had four points, seven rebounds and three steals while sophomore captain Amber Flagg (Windsor, Conn.) added four points, two rebounds and three steals. Sophomore Kala MacKenzie (Fair Haven, Vt.) denied five Cardinal shots on the day in addition to her three points off the bench, and sophomore Mariah Anthony (Northfield, Mass.) had four points, four rebounds and a steal.
Seavitt finished with a game-high 12 points for the Cardinals, followed by Walsh's 10; they added five and four rebounds, respectively. Sophomore Mary Kate Cusack (Clifton Park, N.Y.) recorded eight points, four rebounds, six steals and two assists on the day.
Southern Vermont turns to its 7 p.m. Wednesday night contest at The Sage Colleges while the Cardinals look ahead to their Saturday, November 23 tilt at D'Youville College, tip set for 6 p.m.
