CASTLETON, Vt. – Southern Vermont College played a single non-conference softball game at Castleton University Thursday afternoon—falling 12-0 in five innings at Spartan Field.

A big, eight-run first helped the hosts stake a comfortable advantage before extending the separation with one in the second and another three in the third. Castleton was able to keep SVC off the board through the top of the fifth for the run rule to be invoked and the game to end early.

Next up for Southern Vermont (4-14) is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Newbury College for a 12 p.m. New England Collegiate Conference doubleheader.

Mountaineer sophomore shortstop Lizzy Bench (St. Petersburg, Fla.) was 1-2 on the day with a lead-off single in the top of the first. SVC junior righty Shea Wilson (Mesa, Ariz.) took the loss (3-9) from the circle.

After Bench started the afternoon with a single into right, the Spartans used an inning-ending double play to bring their offense to the plate. That's when Castleton put up a crooked eight-spot with a two-run homer to go in front by a comfortable margin.

A run-scoring double to right in the second preceded the hosts pushing it to double digits with three runs in the third. The Spartans then closed it out in the top of the fifth to win the lone game of the day.
