NEWTON, Mass. — Southern Vermont College was downed 14-5 and then 15-0 in a pair of five-inning New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) matchups against Lesley University on Saturday, the league series being played at Lasell College.
The Mountaineers grabbed a slim one-run lead in the opener's top of the first, only to see Lesley respond with an eight-spot in the home half of the frame. The two sides would go back-and-forth with scoring over the next two innings as LU was able to maintain its separation for the early ending.
Lesley then tallied one in the bottom of the first in game two before adding three runs in the third. The Lynx blew the game open with a crooked 11 in the fourth, taking a comfortable upper hand they would carry to the sweep.
Southern Vermont (3-17, 3-9 NECC) wraps up its Boston-area road trip on Sunday with a league twin bill at Newbury College that is scheduled for 2 p.m.
GAME 1: Lesley 14 – Southern Vermont 5 (5 inn.)
Mountaineer senior captain Rachel Robtoy (Baltic, Conn.) had a walk and two runs scored in the day's first game while sophomore captain Nicole Matthews (Pittstown, N.Y.) registered a 1-for-1 showing with a double, a walk and two RBIs. Freshman first baseman Christina Moore (Wilmington, Vt.) had a run scored and an RBI while classmate and left fielder Molly Madore (Higganum, Conn.) was 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Freshman Lizzy Bench (Saint Petersburg, Fla.) was 1-for-1 in the effort, knocking in two runs with a double.
Bennington College sophomore Caroline Adams (Lakeville, Mass.) took the loss (1-6) from the circle for SVC, striking out two while giving up five earned runs.
Robtoy wore a pitch to get aboard in the top of the first before Matthews did the same for there to be a pair of Mountaineers on the bases. A fielding miscue by Lesley loaded the pond, and Moore then took the third hit by pitch of the frame for the opening run to score.
LU answered in a big way, scoring eight times in the bottom of the frame to take a sizable lead. Southern Vermont cut into it in the top of the second as Madore legged out a bunt single to get on, being the lead runner as the Mountaineers loaded the bases with two down. Matthews came through for her team, tagging a two-run double into left to set the score at 8-3.
The Lynx once again responded, notching three runs of their own to go ahead by eight. The scoring continued in the next box as SVC crossed the plate twice, Bench doubling to score Moore and Madore. But the hosts kept their offense going in the home half of the inning, scratching across three runs for the 14-5 advantage. Neither side would score the rest of the way, Southern Vermont stranding a runner on base in the fourth before going down in order in the fifth as LU took the first of its pair.
GAME 2: Lesley 15 – Southern Vermont 0 (5 inn.)
SVC was held to just one hit in the nightcap as the Lesley pitching was on point. Matthews tallied the single for the Mountaineers, going 1-for-2 to finish her day.
Matthews was issued the loss (2-6) from the pitching rubber, none of her 15 runs allowed being earned.
LU scored once in the bottom of the first before Matthews registered her base knock to lead-off the second. She moved up a base on a failed pickoff, but that's as far as she got as the Lynx were able to get out of the inning unscathed.
Lesley padded its marginal lead in the third with three more runs, and the hosts then chalked up 11 in the fourth to all but end it. The Lynx put away the fifth in order to seal the series sweep.
