NEW LONDON, Conn. — Southern Vermont College dropped a pair of New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) road softball games Saturday afternoon, falling 6-0 and then 16-0 in five innings to hosting Mitchell College.
SVC (9-14, 5-11 NECC) will wrap up the regular season Sunday with a doubleheader at Wheelock College set to begin at 12 p.m.
GAME 1: Mitchell 6, Southern Vermont 0
MC took an early lead in game one with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. The hosts put up one in the third, two in the fourth and one more in the fifth while holding the Mountaineers to just two hits for the shutout victory.
SVC senior center fielder Erika Garay (Walnut, Calif.) and junior second baseman Rachel Robtoy (Baltic, Conn.) were both 1-3 in the effort. Mountaineer senior righty Emily Fleming (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) gave up four earned runs in the circle while striking out eight in the loss (4-9).
GAME 2: Mitchell 16, Southern Vermont 0 (5 inn.)
The Mariner bats exploded for 13 runs in the bottom of the first in the day-cap, adding two in the second and one more in the fourth to wrap up the sweep with the five-inning win.
SVC senior shortstop Kirstin Buchan (Troy, N.Y.) was 1-2 while senior catcher Shelby Jones (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) worked the only Mountaineer walk. Senior right-handed hurler Hayley McDonald (Latham, N.Y.) suffered the loss (4-5) after getting the ball with the start.
