BENNINGTON, Vt. – While playing a perfect two games defensively, the Southern Vermont College softball team tagged nine home runs to sweep a doubleheader against Wheelock College Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action at Willow Park.
SVC won game one 22-0 before finishing the sweep with a 13-0 game-two victory, both in five innings.
The Mountaineers improve their season record to 8-14, 6-4 in conference play, while Wheelock falls to 0-19, 0-13 in the NECC.
SVC junior Emily Fleming (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) had a huge day, going 5-7 with three homers, eight RBIs and five runs scored. She also picked up a win from the circle in the opener to advance her season record to 4-5.
GAME 1: Southern Vt. 22, Wheelock 0
The Mountaineers tacked up six runs in both the first and second innings of game one to take a commanding lead that wouldn't be threatened.
SVC junior Shelby Jones (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) went 4-4 with seven RBIs and three runs scored, knocking out her first two home runs of the season. Fleming was 3-4 with six runs batted in and three runs scored, hitting her second dinger of the year. Freshman Lauryn Zovistoski (Granville, N.Y.) had a 3-5 showing at the dish with two RBIs and two runs scored. Jones and Fleming each tagged a grand slam in the victory.
Fleming collected the win from the rubber, going all five innings for the complete-game shutout; she gave up just five hits and no walks while striking out four on the day. Wildcat freshman hurler Erin Rice (Windsor, Vt.) took the loss (0-4).
WC freshman Maggie Doyle (Kingston, Mass.) was 2-3 out of the lead-off spot, and sophomore Katie Fleming (West Boylston, Mass.) went 1-2 with a double in the effort.
GAME 2: Southern Vt. 13, Wheelock 0
In game two, SVC scored a pair of runs in the first before opening up the game with six more in the second. The Mountaineers added five runs in the third to put the contest out of reach for Wheelock.
Southern Vt. sophomore captain Rachel Robtoy (Baltic, Conn.) went 4-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Zovistoski was 3-4 with five runs batted in and two runs scored with help from a pair of homers, her second and third of the season. Freshman Mallory Celeste (Gansevoort, N.Y.) added a 3-4 showing with two RBIs and a run scored, hitting her fourth round-tripper of the year. Fleming knocked out two home runs, and junior pitcher Hayley McDonald (Latham, N.Y.) helped herself with a one-run shot, her first dinger of 2014.
McDonald picked up the complete-game shutout, giving up six hits and no walks in her five innings from the circle to improve her season record to 4-5. Doyle suffered the loss for Wheelock (0-8).
Doyle was once again 2-3 in the top spot for the Wildcats' offense, and junior Molly Rose (Weymouth, Mass.) added her second 1-2 showing of the day.
The Mountaineers visit Elms College Tuesday for a 3 p.m. NECC doubleheader while Wheelock next matches up with Pine Manor College Wednesday for a pair beginning at 3 p.m.
