Softball Sweeps Daniel Webster to Start NECC Play (W 9-1, W 10-1)

NASHUA, N.H. – The Southern Vermont College softball team finally began New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action with a doubleheader sweep at Daniel Webster College on Sunday, defeating the Eagles 9-1 in six innings and then 10-1 in five.

The Mountaineers start the league schedule 2-0 and improve to 4-8 overall. DWC saw its first regular season action Sunday and begins the year 0-2.

Freshman shortstop Lauryn Zovistoski (Granville, N.Y.) led the Mountaineers with a 6-7 day, recording three hits in each victory; her afternoon included three extra base hits and four RBIs. Junior Brianne Nichols (Watervliet, N.Y.) combined for three hits in the sweep.

Both Mollie Bartles (Torrington, Conn.) and Heather Strong (Palmer, Mass.) picked up a pair of hits on the day for the Eagles.

GAME 1: Southern Vt. 9, Daniel Webster 1 (6)
In the opener, Zovistoski was 3-3 with two triples and two RBIs while Nichols added two hits and knocked in one. Juniors Shelby Jones (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) and Hannah Cross (Bennington, Vt.) each registered an RBI in the win.

SVC pushed two runs across in the third keyed by Zovistoski's RBI triple; she came home on a Jones single, and the Mountaineers broke it open with four in the fifth and three in the sixth.

DWC avoided the shutout in the sixth as Brandi Ritz (Burlington, N.J.) reached on an infield bunt, went to third on a Sara Pelkey (Fitzwilliam, N.H.) single and scored on Strong's single to short.

Junior hurler Emily Fleming (Saratoga Spring, N.Y.) took the win in the circle (2-3) allowing one earned run on six hits while striking out nine. Pelkey took the loss (0-1) allowing just three earned runs on seven hits, striking out eight and walking one.

GAME 2: Southern Vt. 10, Daniel Webster 1, (5)
In the nightcap, Zovistoski was 3-4 while sophomore captain Rachel Robtoy (Baltic, Conn.) knocked in two and scored three times, hitting a two-run homer to right in the top of the fifth.

SVC picked up an unearned run in the first and put up six runs on four hits in the second with help from an RBI single by sophomore left fielder Katie Raymond (Bristol, Conn.) and a two-run double from Zovistoski.

DWC got on the board in the fourth as Bartles singled to lead-off, and she later scored on a Strong single to center.

Robtoy would hit her second home run of the season in the top of the fifth, a two-run inside-the-parker, to put the game out of reach for the Eagles.

Junior righty Hayley McDonald (Latham, N.Y.) picked up the win (2-2) allowing one earned run on just two hits and no walks. She struck out seven DWC batters on the day. Bartles took the loss from the circle (0-1).

Southern Vt. turns to non-conference action Thursday when the Mountaineers play at Williams College, batting as the home team in a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader that was moved from their home diamond. The Eagles get back to action on Tuesday when they host Fisher in an NAIA-NCAA crossover pair beginning at 3:30 p.m.
