MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Southern Vermont College softball team started the season on the right foot with a 7-2 win over Morrisville State College Sunday in the Snowbird Softball Tournament in S.C.

The Mountaineers are 1-0 while Morrisville drops to 0-3 on the season.

Southern Vermont hit well in the latter half of the game to score two runs in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. The Mountaineers accounted for seven hits on the day.

Sophomore pitcher Emily Fleming (Gansevoort, N.Y.) picked up her first win (1-0) of the season after going the distance in the circle, striking out five while only giving up one earned run. She was also 1-4 with a stolen base and run scored on the offensive end.

Twin sister and sophomore captain Meagan Fleming (Gansevoort, N.Y.) was 2-3 in the game with a walk while freshman shortstop Julianna Burnley (Scotia, N.Y.) went 2-4 with two runs scored. Junior outfielder Vanessa Ruelas (Paramount, Calif.) was 2-3 at the plate, and twin sister Nathalie (Paramount, Calif.) added a two-run triple.

The impact inning for the Mountaineers came in the bottom of the fourth when Vanessa got on with a single down the first base line and subsequently moved to second when junior Erika Garay (Walnut, Calif.) laid down the sacrifice; she reached first with an error by the first baseman, and Vanessa knocked them both in with her triple.

Earlier in the day, the Mountaineers lost 12-2 in six innings to Mercer Community College in a game that does not count for their overall record.

Southern Vermont continues it spring trip Monday with a doubleheader pitted against the University of Rutgers-Camden (9 a.m./11 a.m.) while Morrisville is off until next Sunday when the Mustangs visit Hilbert College for a 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. twin bill.
