Troy, NY--- The Sage Colleges' softball team hosted the Mountaineers of Southern Vermont College on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at Robison Field. The Mountaineers fell in each game by identical scores of 8-0, and 8-0.
Sage's junior pitcher Kelsey Newberg (New Britain, CT/New Britain) threw a no-hitter as she fanned 10 Mountaineer batters. Newberg also recorded her 100th career strikeout in the action, bringing her career total to 104, which is fourth highest among the all-time performances at Sage.
Southern Vermont's afternoon was highlighted by a Haley Morgan single in the top of the third inning of game two. Pinch runner Cindyline Sevilla reached third base and looked to cut the Gators lead in half to 2-1 but Newberg was able to strike out the final hitter of the inning, and keep SVC off the scoreboard.
In game one Emily Fleming pitched a complete game and only allowed two earned runs. The freshman scattered ten hits and two walks while striking out one in the start.
With the wins, Sage has won five straight games and is now 8-4 on the year. The losses put SVC at 1-7 on the season. The Mountaineers will return to action next weekend when they travel to Utica on Saturday and host its home opener Sunday against Johnson St at 12 and 2.
