BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Southern Vermont College began its second year of varsity outdoor track & field competition on Saturday at Bridgewater State University's Bears Invitational, the Mountaineers seeing a great deal of early-season success with three new program records being set.
Two of those school bests topped marks from last year's team while the third was a first-time showing for the Mountaineers. Additionally, with a slew of rookie members, the crew tallied 12 personal records in 14 total overall performances during the day and had its first-ever single event victory at the meet.
SVC is back in action next Saturday, April 2 when the team heads to Fitchburg State University for the Jim Sheehan Memorial.
Southern Vermont sophomore Marc Brandmeyer (Bennington, Vt.) saw his first collegiate track & field action at Bridgewater, setting a new program record in the men's 800 meter run by just two 10ths of a second with a time of 2:03.74 as he placed second overall. He was followed in the event by junior Aden Fischer (Arlington, Vt.) who came through just two seconds behind his personal-best mark set last year, crossing Saturday at 2:22.40.
Brandmeyer nearly set a second program record, completing the men's 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:03.42 to be less than a second behind the team's top mark. However, he still made program history as his time was good enough to win the event, being the first-ever Mountaineer to win a track & field discipline since the team became NCAA accredited.
SVC freshman Isaiah Backels (Derry, N.H.) set a new best time for the team in the men's 200 meter dash, topping the old record of 25.40 with a 24.77 showing. Mountaineer junior Elmer Olivares (Miami, Fla.) finished under two seconds behind Backels, crossing at 26.41 to set his PR.
Two Mountaineers partook in the shot put for the first time in team history, sophomore Danielle Simmons (Rensselaer, N.Y.) setting the program's record with a best throw of 8.63 meters. Classmate Tanisha Wright (Brooklyn, N.Y.) set her PR with a long push of 5.9 meters in her first collegiate action.
Southern Vermont freshman Morgan Arleth (Berlin, Vt.) stepped foot on the track for her first stint of competition, setting her personal record in the women's 800 meter run at 3:09.30. Bennington College sophomore Annika Kristiansen (Keene, N.H.) had a solid showing for SVC in the women's 1500 meter run, finishing at 5:36.18 for her PR. Junior captain Shelby Whitman (Bennington, Vt.) was close behind, completing the near-mile course with a time of 5:39.91.
Freshman sprinter Jackson Amankrah (New York, N.Y.) was just over a second off the team's all-time best performance in the men's 100 meter dash, running to a 12.32 in his varsity debut. Olivares also gave it his all in the event, crossing the line at 12.91 to set his second PR on the day.
Senior captain Cameron Michael Curtiss (Milton, Vt.) topped his previous personal best in the men's 1500 meter run by four seconds, coming in at 4:34.16 in his first showing of the season. Alexander Ging (Simsbury, Conn.), another Bennington student, ran the same event in a time of 4:56.27 during his first participation in NCAA varsity athletics for the PR.
