GORHAM, Maine – Four members of the Southern Vermont College men's cross country team competed in a chilly NCAA Division III New England Regional Qualifier Saturday morning for their final race of the season.

The Mountaineers ran alongside 370 other participants in the 8,000 meter event hosted by the University of Southern Maine at the Gorham Country Club.

For runners to advance to the NCAA DIII National Championship, they must be among the first seven finishers who are not on the top-two teams; all members of those top-two squads automatically qualify—regardless of their individual placement.

SVC senior captain Marc Brandmeyer (Bennington, Vt.) came through the finish line first for his crew in the final collegiate competition of his career; he crossed with a time of 27:39—that being 11 seconds faster than his previous best this season.

Bennington College freshman C.G. Holden (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was 36 seconds off of his personal best to be second for the team with a 29:33, and Southern Vermont sophomore Davanté Smith (Ellenville, N.Y.) was next with a 30:16. Junior Isaiah Backels (Derry, N.H.) was fourth for the Mountaineers as he came through with a time of 33:11.
