BENNINGTON, Vt. – Southern Vermont College played its final men's volleyball home match Thursday evening with the hosts falling 3-0 to Elms College at the Mountaineer Athletic Center.
The Blazers, who were ranked seventh in NCAA Division III this week, took the opening set 25-10. Elms then topped SVC 25-15 in the second frame before closing out the sweep with another 25-10 victory.
The Mountaineers (6-15, 3-10 NECC) will wrap up the regular season on Saturday with a 12 p.m. league tilt at Nichols College.
Backels led the Mountaineers with eight kills on the night, and he added six digs and three service aces to his line. Dickerson chipped in with four kills and a pair of assists while sophomore Zach Rogers (North Bennington, Vt.) had three kills and two digs. Freshman Fernando Perez (Azusa, Calif.) posted 11 assists in the effort.
Elms registered an outstanding .611 hitting percentage in the opening set as the Blazers scored 20 of their 25 points. A Backels ace put the Mountaineers' deficit at just 10-6, but EC would rally for eight unanswered points and never look back.
The onset of the second game was close with a Perez ace making it just a 9-7 Blazer edge. Southern Vermont later won three-straight with consecutive Backels aces setting the score at 17-14, but Elms ran away with it and finished the frame on an 8-1 spurt.
The Mountaineers led 5-4 early in the third set as Backels landed a pair of kills while Rogers provided one of his own. EC proved to be too much, however, and stormed to a 16-1 run for some breathing room. Points went back-and-forth at the end of the game for the Blazers to finish their second win over SVC this year.
