ALBANY, N.Y. – Southern Vermont College dropped a non-conference men's volleyball match to The Sage Colleges Tuesday night as the Mountaineers were swept at Kahl Gymnasium.
The hosting Gators took the contest with straight-set scores of 25-14, 25-21, and 25-9.
SVC (6-14) now prepares for Senior Night on Thursday with the team hosting Elms College for a 7 p.m. New England Collegiate Conference tilt and the College's last home event at the Mountaineer Athletic Center.
Southern Vermont senior Isaiah Backels (Weare, N.H.) had a team-best five kills to go along with his four digs and four service aces. Classmate Adrian Dickerson (Bristol, Vt.) followed with four kills, three digs, and a pair of aces while sophomore Skylar O'Dell (Bennington, Vt.) notched a match-best eight digs in the effort. Freshman Fernando Perez (Azusa, Calif.) registered eight assists and five digs on the night.
Sage stormed to a 13-2 lead to start the match, and the Mountaineers wouldn't get closer than seven the rest of the way.
After a Backels kill made it a 5-4 SVC edge in the second set, the Gators won the next four to pull ahead. Southern Vermont responded, however, with an 8-1 run which was highlighted by two Backels aces and another three from junior Joey Wolodkevich (Coxsackie, N.Y.). With the game tied 18-18 following a Backels kills, Sage took control with four-straight points; service then went back-and-forth the rest of the way for the hosts to go up 2-0 on the evening.
The Gators never trailed in the third frame after going on top 11-2. They would later rally for eight unanswered points before winning four of the last five to capture the sweep.
