BENNINGTON, Vt. – A high-powered Endicott College squad defeated Southern Vermont College in straight sets Tuesday night during a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's volleyball matchup at the Mountaineer Athletic Center.
EC—which entered the night ranked 12th in Division III—claimed a 25-10 win in the opening set before running away to top SVC 25-5 in the second frame. Endicott then finished off the night with a 25-11 victory in the third game.
The Mountaineers (4-11, 1-7 NECC) are now off for their spring break—returning to action Monday, March 25 with a 7 p.m. league tilt at Dean College.
Southern Vermont senior Isaiah Backels (Weare, N.H.) and sophomore Zach Rogers (North Bennington, Vt.) each had three kills for the hosts while sophomore Skylar O'Dell (Bennington, Vt.) had a team-best five digs on the defensive end. Freshman Fernando Perez (Azusa, Calif.) posted four assists, three digs, and a kill in the effort.
A kill by Rogers made it just a 4-2 Endicott edge in the opening set, but a 7-1 Gull run pushed the deficit into double digits. EC then outscored the Mountaineers 9-2 to end the game and take the upper hand in the match.
The Gulls took the first six points of the second frame and never looked back. A 10-1 surge by the visitors then put it out of reach for SVC and made way for Endicott to claim a 2-0 lead on the night.
EC controlled the third set from the start after scoring the first five points. Backels had two of his kills during the game, but the Gulls posted a .455 hitting percentage in the frame to pull away and close out the sweep.
