BENNINGTON, Vt. – Southern Vermont College fell 3-0 to Nichols College Wednesday night in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's volleyball action at the Mountaineer Athletic Center.
The Bison took the first two sets by 25-14 margins before clipping SVC 25-15 in the third.
The Mountaineers (3-10, 0-6 NECC) are back at home for their next match as SVC hosts Dean College on Friday for a 7 p.m. league contest.
Southern Vermont sophomore Zach Rogers (North Bennington, Vt.) led the hosts with six kills, and he also tallied three digs on the night. Senior Isaiah Backels (Weare, N.H.) had 12 assists, five digs, and a pair of block assists while junior Hans Resignac (Philadelphia, Pa.) posted three block assists and a pair of kills.
Down 8-2 in the onset of the match, SVC trimmed the deficit down to three. Nichols won the next five points, however, and the Bison later scored six unanswered points to run away with it. Rogers had two of his kills in the opening game.
Southern Vermont held a slim edge in the start of the second set—only to see NC eventually pull ahead and then garner some separation with a 6-0 run. Rogers had another two kills in the frame, but it wasn't enough to get the Mountaineers back in it as Nichols went on top 2-0 in the match.
The visitors then took to a 10-3 run in the front end of the third set, but Rogers and Backels would register back-to-back kills later on to keep SVC's hopes alive. The Bison were too much for the hosts, however, and finished off their second sweep of Southern Vermont this year.
