BROOKLINE, Mass. – Southern Vermont College was clipped 3-0 Thursday night by Newbury College in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's volleyball matchup at Hellenic College's Pappas Gymnasium.

In its first match since March 10, SVC was edged 25-21 in the opening set. The Nighthawks won the second by a 25-15 margin before closing out the match, and season, sweep with a 25-19 victory in the third.

Next up for the Mountaineers (0-14, 0-7 NECC) is a Saturday home tilt as Southern Vermont hosts Eastern Nazarene College for a 1 p.m. Conference start.

SVC senior captain El Olivares (Miami, Fla.) tied the match-high of nine kills while adding a team-best 11 digs and three assists to his line. Sophomore Te Hayward (Baltimore, Md.) also had nine kills, and he chipped in with seven digs defensively. Junior Isaiah Backels (Derry, N.H.) registered 13 assists and six digs as sophomore Davanté Smith (Ellenville, N.Y.) provided five digs in the effort.

The first set was tightly contested until an 8-1 Nighthawk run put the hosts up 20-13. SVC came back to take seven of the next 10 behind kills from Olivares and Smith, but NC was able to hold off the Mountaineers to win the game.

A pair of Hayward kills helped give the visitors a slim 6-4 edge in the second before Newbury went on a 7-1 surge to take the upper hand. After points were traded through the midway point of the frame—as SVC couldn't get any closer than two—the Nighthawks finished on a strong note to go up 2-0 on the night.

NC won the first three points of the third, but Southern Vermont would take the next four to keep it from slipping away. Service went back-and-forth as Hayward's second kill of the set tied it at 13-13—only to see a 6-2 run put Newbury in front by four for a lead that would be sustained for the sweep.
