NEWTON, Mass. – Southern Vermont College was topped 3-0 by the hosting Mustangs Friday night in non-conference men's volleyball action at the Mount Ida College Athletic Center.
MIC won the match with straight-set scores of 25-19, 25-18, and 25-19. The two sides will face off for a rematch at SVC on March 27.
The Mountaineers (0-2) continue their weekend road trip Saturday with a tri-match at Emerson College; they're back on the court at 1 p.m. for a first serve against 15th-ranked Mass. Institute of Technology before taking on the hosting Lions at 3 p.m.
Southern Vermont sophomore Te Hayward (Baltimore, Md.) tallied a team-best seven kills while adding three blocks on the night, and senior captain El Olivares (Miami, Fla.) had three kills and a match-high 12 digs for the Mountaineers. Freshman Zach Rogers (North Bennington, Vt.) registered nine assists and three digs while sophomore Hans Resignac (Philadelphia, Pa.) posted two blocks and a pair of digs on the defensive end.
Mount Ida never trailed through the opening set as the Mustangs went on top first before building a nine-point lead with an 8-2 run. Olivares had a kill and an ace as SVC won five straight to get within four, but service went back-and-forth the rest of the way for MIC to grab the match advantage.
A pair of Mustang aces saw the hosts go in front 11-6 in the second frame, but the Mountaineers stayed close midway through the game by winning five of the next eight to stay within three. Mount Ida would answer with four in-a-row, however, to garner some extra separation that would be sustained through the final point.
MIC slowly took to a 10-6 edge to begin the third, but an Olivares kill then helped SVC cut its deficit in half. However, a pair of three unanswered points gave the Mustangs a 20-13 upper hand, and they were able to carry that lead to their first win of the year.
