BENNINGTON, Vt. — The New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) announced on Sunday its weekly award winners for the period ending April 5, 2015 with Southern Vermont College freshman Stewart Ramirez (Los Angeles, Calif.) being tabbed the Men's Volleyball Rookie of the Week.
This is Ramirez's fourth NECC Rookie of the Week honor this season as he continues a stellar first campaign in the Southern Vermont uniform.
Ramirez had an outstanding week for the Mountaineers, registering match-highs in the kills column in two of their contests. He struck .357 on the week while recording 3.33 kills and 1.73 digs per set. The rookie had 14 kills against both Elms (.684) and No. 3 SUNY New Paltz (.407) before putting down 12 kills and popping up 11 digs for the double-double against Ramapo. He then tallied 10 kills, four digs and two service aces in a 3-1 loss at No. 6 Springfield in the SC Invitational on Saturday.
The freshman currently ranks fourth in the conference and 45th in the nation in hitting percentage (.297) while being third in the NECC in both kills per set (3.25) and points per set (3.61); those last two marks are good enough for him to be 24th and 33rd in NCAA Division III, respectively.
Ramirez and the Mountaineers next line up for a critical NECC matchup at Newbury College Tuesday night (7 p.m.) with the last two seeds for this weekend's postseason tournament to be decided by the outcome.
