Langat, Ponce Tabbed with All-NECC Men’s Soccer Honors

MARSHFIELD, Mass. – A pair of Southern Vermont College men's soccer players were honored with 2018 All-New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) accolades on Tuesday as the league announced its end-of-the-year awards and all-conference teams.

Sophomore midfielder Nick Langat (Silver Spring, Md.) was voted onto the All-NECC Third Team, and freshman Carlos Ponce (El Paso, Texas) received a selection to the Del Malloy Sportsmanship Team.

Langat helped facilitate the Mountaineer offense from the middle third of the pitch while also providing a first line of defense against the opposition. He scored four goals on the year and added an assist to his stat line. One of his tallies was an overtime game winner in early September.

"Nick was a workhorse all year in the midfield for us," said SVC third-year head coach Greg Gilmore '12. "He's a great player in the middle of the field as he wants to distribute, works hard to win the ball back, and also knows how to score. We're expecting big things from him over the next two years as we continue to build this program, and we feel that Nick is going to continue to get better and be a real force in this league."

Ponce made a big impact for the Mountaineers during his first season in the Southern Vermont uniform—working the outside well in addition to taking a majority of the team's corner kicks. He played in all 19 of SVC's games and started 17 of those while chalking up an assist in his rookie campaign. Ponce did not receive a single card throughout the year as he demonstrated respect for his opponents, the officials, and his teammates.

"Carlos was a scrappy central midfielder all year for us," Gilmore said of his Sportsmanship Team selection. "He has a great attitude on game day and on the practice field, and we're excited to keep building this program with him."

Coaches from around the league voted for the all-conference teams and major award winners at the end of the regular season.
