BENNINGTON, Vt. – Southern Vermont College squared off with the newest member of the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) in Dean College at Everett Field on Saturday with the Mountaineers falling 3-0 to the undefeated Bulldog squad.
DC took a 1-0 upper hand into the break before tacking up a second goal in the 69th minute. An SVC own goal late in the match then made way for the 3-0 final.
Southern Vermont (4-11, 2-2 NECC) is back at it on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. NECC showdown at Elms College while the Bulldogs (10-0-2, 3-0 NECC) host Wheelock College the same day for a 4 p.m. league tilt.
Dean freshman Felipe Campos (Barnstable, Mass.) scored the first two goals for his squad—bringing his season total to 11.
SVC freshman goalie Dylan Berg (Tampa, Fla.) made six saves in the loss (4-11) while DC freshman keeper Nathan Silveira (East Providence, R.I.) didn't face any shots on net in the victory (7-0-2).
The Bulldogs controlled the pace of play from the opening kickoff before getting on the scoreboard in the 24th minute. They possessed the ball in the SVC third of the pitch before sending a through pass into the left side of the box; junior Yuri Mascarenhas (Praia, Cape Verde) got on the end of it and sent a one-time pass along the top of the goal area for Campos to knock it in from right in front of the frame.
Southern Vermont was able to hold off the visitors through the rest of the half and the opening 23 minutes of the second stanza, but that's when Campos struck again for a piece of insurance. A pass came into the middle of the box from the right, and senior Pepe Vieira (Brockton, Mass.) tried to poke it in with his first touch; the ball rang off the crossbar, but Campos was in perfect position to lunge forward and head it home for the 2-0 advantage. Campos would later cross the ball from the right side in the 82nd minute, and it was knocked into the net by a Mountaineer defender's sliding attempt to clear it away for the last goal of the game.
