CANTON, N.Y. – The Southern Vermont College defense was nearly able to force overtime Sunday afternoon in non-conference men's soccer action at SUNY Canton, but the hosting Kangaroos scored in the 81st minute for the 1-0 victory.

Canton outshot SVC by a 26-2 clip and had a 9-0 advantage in attempts on net throughout the day. The Roos also took a 10-0 upper hand in corner kicks as they controlled the pace of the game, although they were nearly kept off the board by the Mountaineer backfield and goalkeeping unit.

SVC (4-10) is next in action on Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. New England Collegiate Conference game at home against Dean College.

Mountaineer freshman goalkeeper Dylan Berg (Tampa, Fla.) posted eight saves in the loss (4-10).

The hosts took 11 shots to Southern Vermont's one in the opening 45 minutes of play, but Berg turned away all six that were on frame to keep the match scoreless at halftime. The Mountaineers conceded just a single shot on net in the first 35 minutes of the second stanza—only to see the next Roo attempt beat the SVC netminder for the slim 1-0 edge. Southern Vermont got a shot off four minutes later in a push to tie it up, but the ball sailed high before Canton closed out the win.

Sunday's game was the Mountaineers' seventh of the year decided by a single tally; the Mountaineers are 3-4 in those contests.
