CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Southern Vermont College men's soccer team began the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) schedule Saturday afternoon, losing 6-0 on the road to Lesley University at Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols.
Lynx freshman Erik Johansen (West Harrison, N.Y.) continued his torrid start to the season, notching his first hat-trick of his collegiate career in the first half, opening the scoring just 31 seconds into the game; his other two came in the 21st and 43rd minutes, respectively, to give him six on the season.
After going into halftime with a 3-0 lead, the Lynx quickly returned to the scoring as junior defender Ray Cohen (Coventry, Conn.) notched his first goal of the season in the 47th minute. Cohen headed in a cross from classmate Jordan Santos (Middlebury, Conn.), who was credited with his second helper of the day, to give Lesley a 4-0 edge.
Senior midfielder Josh Weinert (Newark, Calif.) and freshman forward Mahmoud Chabarek (Allepo, Syria) each netted the first goals of their collegiate careers to round out the scoring for the Lynx.
Southern Vermont junior Brenden Shea (North Providence, R.I.) and sophomore Chris Dunham (Valley Falls, N.Y.) split time in net for the Mountaineers. Shea made three stops in the opening half while Dunham was credited with one save in the second. For Lesley, senior Nathan Trucks (Guilford, Conn.) and sophomore Chase Donley (Elizabethtown, Pa.) teamed up for the shutout, each making one save.
The two squads take a week off before returning to NECC action Saturday, September 28; Southern Vermont (1-7, 0-1 NECC) welcomes Daniel Webster College for a 3:30 showdown during the College's Homecoming Weekend, and Lesley (5-3-1) visits Regis College for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
