NEWPORT, R.I. – In the final minute of the first half, Salve Regina University scored two goals and then went on to defeat Southern Vermont College 5-0 Sunday afternoon in men's soccer action on the Seahawks' home pitch.
SRU junior forward Devin L'Heureux (Litchfield, N.H.) created some space on the right side and launched a shot across the goal in the 44th minute to break a scoreless tie. Salve Regina then benefited from a Mountaineer own goal before the end of the first stanza to take a 2-0 cushion into intermission. That score held for most of the second half until sophomore midfielder Alvaro Castillo (Tecucigalpa M.D.C., Honduras) came off the bench to score twice.
Castillo's first score came at 68:50 with an assist from freshman Steven Aston (Sherborn, Mass.). Sophomore Mark Marino (Smithfield, R.I.) assisted on Castillo's second goal at 75:57. Castillo also added an assist to his ledger on the game's final goal at 79:07 from Enrique Lecaros (Paterson, N.J.).
Seahawk sophomore Daniel Stern (Kings Park, N.Y.) played the full 90 minutes for Salve Regina in the shutout victory, registering five saves. Junior Brenden Shea (North Providence, R.I.) played close to home while making 11 saves for the Mountaineers.
Southern Vermont (0-4) next hosts The Sage Colleges on Wednesday at 4 p.m. while the Seahawks (2-1-1) are off until they open their Commonwealth Coast Conference schedule at Curry College next Saturday at 5 p.m.
