mike pierre named to all-northeast teams

BENNINGTON, Vt. – D3hoops.com announced on Tuesday its 2017-18 all-region squads with Southern Vermont College senior Mike Pierre (Melrose, N.Y.) being honored on the All-Northeast Fourth Team.

That comes one day after he was recognized as one of the top men's basketball players in his corner of the country by being named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III All-Northeast Second Team.

The regional honors follow the announcement of Pierre being chosen as the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) 2018 Player of the Year two weeks earlier. They joins his list of awards which also includes the NECC championship tournament's Most Valuable Player laurel—an accolade he garnered after helping the Mountaineers claim the league title and earn a chance to play in the DIII national playoff.

"We are very proud of Mike for all that he has accomplished during his time here at SVC," said Southern Vermont fifth-year head coach Dan Engelstad. "Mike worked very hard this offseason to put himself in a position to be one of the top players in the region. This is well-deserved, and we will miss his playmaking next year."

Pierre led the Mountaineers with 19.1 points per game while adding 6.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.7 steals per contest. He was chosen as the NECC Player of the Week once this year after breaking the SVC single-game scoring record with 47 points on January 3 against Mass. College of Liberal Arts.

The Southern Vermont senior had an outstanding tenure with the Mountaineers after transferring to SVC from DII's Georgian Court University for the spring of 2017. In his three semesters with the team, Pierre scored 766 points (18.2/game); the Mountaineers went 36-6 (.857) when he played in the Southern Vermont uniform.

Pierre is the second SVC player to garner All-NABC honors as DeShawn Hamlet '16 was selected to the All-Northeast Second Team in 2015. Pierre's D3hoops.com decoration is the fourth All-Northeast laurel program history after Hamlet was voted to the organization's All-Second Team in '15 and Nick Harrington '08 earned All-First Team honors in both 2007 and 2008.

NABC teams are decided by voting from DIII member coaches. The NABC was founded in 1927 by Forrest "Phog" Allen, the legendary basketball coach at the University of Kansas. Allen organized coaches into the collective group to serve as 'Guardians of the Game.' The NABC currently has nearly 5,000 members—consisting primarily of university and college men's basketball coaches. All members of the NABC are expected to uphold the core values of being a Guardian of the Game by bringing attention to the positive aspects of the sport of basketball and the role coaches play in the academic and athletic lives of today's student-athletes.

D3hoops.com, established in 1994 as 'Division III Basketball Online,' is managed and run by a small group of columnists and contributors. Ballots for its all-region teams were comprised of nominations from DIII sports information directors, and select SID's then voted to select the honorees.
