BENNINGTON, Vt. – Four players reached double digits for the Union College Dutchmen men's basketball team Thursday night as they defeated Southern Vermont College, 86-60, at SVC in non-conference play.
Union held an 11-point lead at halftime due to 12 points from senior captain Joe Mason (Chicago, Ill.) and another 10 from senior captain Keven Donohue (Hudson Falls, N.Y.). Mountaineer sophomore captain Jermaine Campbell (Bridgeport, Conn.) had nine of SVC's 29 points at the break. He finished the night with 16.
Southern Vermont tried to close the gap early in the second half, but the Union rebound game gave the Dutchmen the advantage with possession; they had 41 boards while the Mountaineers grabbed 25 on the night.
SVC senior captain Taeshon Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.) had ten of his game-high 18 points in the second half, but it would not be enough as Union kept applying efficient pressure in the offensive end and converted its free throw attempts going 13-16 from the charity line.
Mason finished with 14 points for the Dutchmen, while Donohue had 12 and senior Evan Croll (Vernon, N.Y.) had 11. Sophomore Terell Whinney was right behind them, recording 10 for Coach Montana off the bench. Donohue also led all players with eight rebounds.
Campbell had a team-high seven rebound for the Mountaineers with Johnson adding another six.
The Mountaineers (0-8, 0-1 NECC) return to New England Collegiate Conference action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. start against Newbury College, while the Dutchmen (5-1) begin Liberty League play on Saturday at 4 p.m. when they visit Rochester Institute of Technology.
