Baseball Takes No. 5 Seed in NECC Playoffs, to Visit Fourth-Seeded Eastern Nazarene on Tuesday for First-rounder

MARSHFIELD, Mass. – Southern Vermont College earned a berth in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) baseball championship tournament for the first time since 2016 as the Mountaineers took the No. 5 seed in the 2019 bracket as announced by the league on Monday.

SVC split its final Conference doubleheader on Monday—taking one of two against Eastern Nazarene College to finish the year at 8-8 in league action (14-16-1 overall). The Mountaineers will take to the road Tuesday to face off with ENC once again as Southern Vermont visits the fourth-seeded Lions (19-17, 8-8 NECC) for a first-round play-in game.

Lesley University also ended with an 8-8 mark in Conference play (11-23 overall) but took the three-way tiebreaker with a 3-1 mark against ENC and the Mountaineers. Eastern Nazarene went 2-2 against the tied teams while SVC was 1-3.

“I am proud of the season we have had thus far,” said second-year SVC head coach Adam Skonieczki. “We had obviously faced some adversity and overcome it—which is a great testament to our players. Making the playoffs checks off a goal for the Mountaineers. We were confident that we had the talent and mentality to make the NECC postseason, but we definitely aren’t satisfied yet.”

With a victory Tuesday, SVC will move into the double elimination portion of the tournament. The Mountaineers would head to top-seeded Mitchell College (31-6, 15-1 NECC) on Thursday for the first game of the championship pool. Despite Thursday’s result, Southern Vermont would then go back to MC on Saturday for the completion of the playoffs.

“I think the best part about us right now is that we are playing our best baseball,” Skonieczki added. “We are really pitching it at a great rate, timely hitting has been at a high, and, defensively, we are playing a great brand of baseball. To make a run, we just need to play within ourselves. We believe we are talented enough to compete for a championship; we just need to play consistent and confident baseball.”

Tuesday’s other play-in game has sixth-seeded Becker College (13-24, 7-9 NECC) visiting No. 3 Lesley with the winner of that tilt heading to second-seeded New England College (22-15, 10-6 NECC) on Thursday.
