FRANKLIN, Mass. – Southern Vermont College picked up a valuable pair of New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) baseball victories Sunday as the Mountaineers defeated Dean College 9-8 and then 9-2 at Longley Field.
SVC used an eight-run sixth in game one to pull ahead, and the Mountaineers were able to hold on for the slim victory. Southern Vermont then scored five times in the top of the first during game two, and the visitors held the Bulldogs to just a pair of scores to claim the sweep.
The Mountaineers (13-15-1, 7-7 NECC) are back at it on Monday as they take on Eastern Nazarene College at the New England Baseball Complex; first pitch of the regular season-ending doubleheader is slated for 11:30 a.m.
GAME 1: Southern Vermont 9 – Dean 8
DC led just 2-1 entering the sixth, but that's when the Mountaineers jumped on top with a big, eight-run frame. The Bulldogs came back and pushed four across in the home half of the inning, and they got within one in the seventh. SVC got Dean to leave the bases loaded, however, to wrap up its first win of the day.
Southern Vermont sophomore infielder Zac Cronk (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) went 2-3 with a walk, a run scored, and an RBI while senior Cody Sullivan (Brunswick, N.Y.) and freshman Jacob Villegas (Fontana, Calif.) each had a hit and two runs batted in.
SVC senior righty Ryan Richards (Beaumont, Calif.) improved to 5-0 on the season as he struck out three in 5.2 innings of work. Junior right-hander Kyle Liddy (Oriskany, N.Y.) entered the game with the pond full of ducks in the seventh and recorded the final two outs to pick up his first save in the Mountaineer uniform.
After Dean went on top 2-1 in the fifth, Southern Vermont stormed to a seven-run lead in the sixth. Senior Ryan Serrato (Whittier, Calif.), sophomore Nick Guajardo (Mansfield, Texas), Sullivan, Villegas, and Cronk all tallied run-scoring hits during the frame with Sullivan and Villegas' going for two bases.
The Bulldogs came right back and touched the dish four times in the sixth, and they worked two bases-loaded walks in the seventh to get within one. Liddy was able to strike out the next batter, however, before inducing a game-ending grounder to third.
GAME 2: Southern Vermont 9 – Dean 2
The Mountaineers wasted no time in taking a comfortable advantage in the backend of the twin bill as they scored five times in the top of the first. DC put up a pair in the fourth, but SVC came right back and chalked up three runs in the fifth before adding one more in the sixth. Dean was held to six hits throughout the game for Southern Vermont to close out the sweep.
Guajardo went 2-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored, and junior left fielder Brandon Lara-Mack (San Gabriel, Calif.) was 2-4 with a run scored and another batted in. Cronk and senior center fielder Zack Stacey (Saratoga, N.Y.) were both 2-4 with a run scored in the effort.
Mountaineer senior right-hander Joe Braim (Saratoga, N.Y.) went all seven innings on the hill—striking out six while allowing just one earned run for the win (3-6).
Guajardo wrapped a two-run double to right-center in the top of the first, and Lara-Mack's ensuing single to right accounted for what would be the winning run. Dean got two back in the fourth with a sacrifice fly and SVC error, but the rest was all Southern Vermont. Serrato capped the day's scoring when he poked a double to left-center for Liddy to come around from second and put his team on top by seven.
