Arancio, D’Agnese Land All-NECC Second Team Honors, Hogue Garners All-Sportsmanship Accolades

john arancio, niko d'agnese, and monte hogue receive all-necc honors

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Three Southern Vermont College baseball players collected 2018 All-New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) honors on Monday as the league announced its yearly awards and all-conference teams.

Senior shortstop John Arancio (Oradell, N.J.) and senior outfielder Niko D'Agnese (Mahopac, N.Y.) were both chosen to the NECC All-Second Team while junior right-handed pitcher Monte Hogue (Phoenix, Ariz.) was selected to represent SVC on the All-Sportsmanship Team.

Arancio had the best year of his Southern Vermont tenure as he tallied a .360 batting average which was good enough for the ninth-best in the Conference. He crossed the plate 30 times and knocked in 26 runs while adding 16 walks, and the senior Mountaineer knocked out four home runs with two of those being grand slams. He was named the NECC Player of the Week on April 30 before being selected as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division III National Hitter of the Week.

"John did a great job anchoring the middle of our lineup," said SVC first-year head coach Adam Skonieczki. "I am pleased that the other coaches in the NECC thought as highly of John as I do. He really made some great strides at the plate this year and increased his power numbers substantially."

D'Agnese hit .333 on the season for what was also his best batting average while at Southern Vermont. He recorded 14 runs scored and 12 RBIs while adding six walks and five doubles to his line. The senior captain made only one error in 49 total chances in the outfield—being a regularly solid defensive player and covering a lot of area in the gaps.

"Niko was really good for us all year," Skonieczki said. "He came through with some clutch hits and really led our team by example. He did a tremendous job of staying consistent from game-to-game and at bat-to-at bat. That type of senior mentality will be missed in 2019."

Hogue tossed 10 innings through his seven appearances out of the bullpen in 2018. When not on the mound, the SVC junior was a supportive member of the squad and carried a positive attitude across the diamond.

"Monte is the prime example of a great teammate," said Skonieczki. "He is a leader by example and is always respectful of the opposition and the game. We know what to expect with Monte—with his attitude and the effort he approaches every day with."

League coaches nominate players for all-conference teams and major award winners towards the end of the year, and voting is then conducted before the start of the championship tournament.
