HOLYOKE, Mass. – The Southern Vermont College baseball team fell 6-0 to Elms College Tuesday night before being topped 2-1 in the eighth inning during a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) doubleheader at Mackenzie Stadium.

SVC's (5-14, 3-7 NECC) next game is slated for Wednesday at Saint Michael's College with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

GAME 1: Elms 6 – Southern Vermont 0
The Blazers put up three runs in the bottom of the second for all they would need for the win. EC added another three over the next two innings for good measure while holding SVC hitless through the contest.

Southern Vermont freshman lefty Dylan Ramirez (Orlando, Fla.) was touched with the loss (1-2)—striking out two through five innings with the start.

After both sides went down in order in the first frame, Elms scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the second. EC manufactured a run with two down in the third, and the hosts then added another pair with two outs in the fourth. Neither side would cross the dish the rest of the way as Elms finished off the series-opening victory.

GAME 2: Elms 2 – Southern Vermont 1 (8 inn.)
After EC notched a lone run in the bottom of the second, the 1-0 score lasted into the final scheduled inning. Southern Vermont was able to scratch across a score to tie it up and held off Elms in the bottom of the seventh to force the extra frame. The Blazers would take the night's sweep in the eighth, however, as SVC dropped its second extra-inning league game in four days.

Mountaineer sophomore left fielder Nate Hickey (Bristol, Conn.) went 2-3 with the game-tying RBI while senior shortstop John Arancio (Oradell, N.J.) was 1-2 with a pair of walks and a stolen base.

SVC freshman lefty David Payne (Milford, Conn.) was strapped with the loss (0-1) after allowing the winning run to reach base in the bottom of the eighth. He struck out three in his 1.2 innings of work out of the pen.

After EC scored once in the bottom of the second, Southern Vermont stranded three runners over the next two frames. Payne entered in the bottom of the sixth and struck out a Blazer before getting an inning-ending grounder to short—giving his offence one final chance.

The Mountaineers took advantage of their trip to the plate in the seventh with a lead-off walk coming around to hurt the hosts. With junior first baseman Cody Sullivan (Brunswick, N.Y.) at second and one down, Hickey came through as he raked the clutch single to left for the tying run to touch home. Southern Vermont then loaded the pond, but Elms was able to record back-to-back strikeouts to get back in the dugout.

Payne struck out two Blazers in-a-row in the bottom of the seventh and then induced a grounder to short for the game to go into the extra box. Arancio led off the eighth with a single to right and then stole second, but he would be left there as EC retired the next three batters.

The home half of the eighth saw Elms capitalize on a lead-off walk when a one-out single to right-center scored the Blazer from second and made way for the hosts to win the season series.
