NEW LONDON, Conn. – Southern Vermont College opened its 2018 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) baseball schedule on Saturday at Mitchell College's Alumni Field—falling 16-2 in the first of the three-game series.
The Mountaineers went up 2-0 in the top of the second, but that would be all the offense they could manufacture for the day. MC came back with five runs in the home half of the frame and went on to pad its cushion through the rest of the tilt.
SVC (1-8, 0-1 NECC) and Mitchell will wrap up the league series on Sunday in New London with a doubleheader slated to begin at 1 p.m. As that twin bill was originally scheduled to be played at Southern Vermont, the Mountaineers will bat as the home team.
Junior Ryan Cullam (Guilderland, N.Y.) had the first multi-hit game of his SVC career as the second baseman went 3-4 with a run batted in. Sophomore left fielder Nate Hickey (Bristol, Conn.) was 2-4 with a run scored for the Mountaineers.
Southern Vermont sophomore right-hander Rees LeSoine (Florence, Mont.) went the first five innings from the hill—striking out three in the loss (0-2).
After Lesoine retired the Mariners in order to end the first, SVC got on the board to take the early lead. Everything happened with two outs—Hickey starting it when he got aboard with a bunt single. Senior third baseman Rob Spatafore (Mahopac, N.Y.) later rolled a run-scoring base hit to short for Hickey to come in from third, and Cullam followed with an RBI single to center.
Mitchell responded in its turn at the plate, however, with five runs on five singles and a hit by pitch. The Mariners scored another three in the fourth and continued to cross the plate through their next three at bats while keeping SVC from crossing the dish.
