BENNINGTON, Vt. – Southern Vermont College senior Anthony Mercuri (Ridge, N.Y.) earned his way to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week for the period ending April 10, 2017 as announced by the online organization Tuesday.
Mercuri had a record-setting day on Monday in a big, New England Collegiate Conference series-clinching over Newbury College. He racked up eight runs batted in on a 3-4 performance at the dish–that RBI mark being a new school record for SVC. Each of his hits against the Nighthawks went for extra bases as he tallied two home runs, one being a grand slam, and a double.
Mercuri was 4-7 (.571) overall on the week with eight RBI's and four runs scored--slugging at 1.572 and registering a .625 on-base percentage. He was 1-3 with a run scored at Union College on Wednesday.
"It was great to see all of [Anthony's] hard work pay off," commented SVC head coach Dave Gage '10. "He has continuously worked to improve his swing each day, and that showed last week."
The Team of the Week is D3baseball.com's weekly honor roll—now in its sixth year of honoring performers at each position from the previous week. Players are selected from nominations from their school's sports information directors. This is the ninth Team of the Week for the 2017 season.
Tuesday's honor is the third time in the last two years that a Mountaineer has collected the national recognition. Right-handed pitcher Dylan Angelo (Amsterdam, N.Y.) and center fielder Zack Stacey (Saratoga, N.Y.) both picked up a Team of the Week nod in 2016.
"These awards are a testament of our program moving in the right direction," Gage added.
