Coach Newton, a 2004 graduate of Southern Vermont and standout runner for the Mountaineers, joined the women's soccer program as an assistant prior to the start of the 2018 season.
She spent four years at the helm of the SVC men's & women's cross country programs from 2013-16. She was also the leader of Southern Vermont’s combined outdoor track & field team for three years--a program that completed its first varsity season in the spring of 2015.
Newton led the SVC men's cross country team to three-straight NECC championships between 2014-16 while also being selected as the league's Coach of the Year in each of those seasons.
She came back to the SVC campus after assisting the Williams College cross country teams for eight years in conjunction with coaching the local Mount Anthony Union High School indoor and outdoor track & field teams; she will continue to lead the MAUHS teams while coaching at Southern Vermont. In February of 2013, she was named the Vermont Indoor Track Coach of the Year, the second consecutive year in which she had received the award; she was also given the accolade in 2003.
The recipient of an Associate’s in Science degree held the Southern Vermont 5k record until 2016 after she ran a 20:07 5K in 2002 at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship. She posted a 24:09 6K in the 2002 NCAA New England Regional Championship for an SVC record which still stands today. Newton ran for head coach Scott Kilgallon while a Mountaineer, being named to the All-GNAC Team twice with a third-place finish at the conference championship in 2003 and a fourth-place finish in 2002. She accomplished these feats all while not only taking a full course load, but also raising a family.
Newtwon earned a certification and membership from the National Federation Interscholastic Coaches Association and is also a certified aerobics instructor by the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America. In 2007, she became a certified USA Track & Field Level 1 track & field coach.
Intermittently, Newton has also provided personal training services for over 20 years around the Bennington area. She was also enrolled at American River College in Sacramento, Calif. where she studied forestry prior to attending Southern Vermont.
