BENNINGTON, Vt. – Christin Gowan is taking on another new role at Southern Vermont College as President David Evans announced her as the institution’s Interim Director of Athletics on Friday.

Gowan was originally hired in March 2017 as the 11th head coach of SVC’s women’s basketball program. Over the next 14 months, she would be tasked with additional positions and responsibilities—including being named the Associate Director of Athletics in October.

Evans said, “In just a little over a year at SVC, Christin Gowan has demonstrated strong leadership skills, a clear and thorough understanding of the critical place of athletics at the College, and a genuine and deep commitment to student-athlete excellence on the playing surface and in the classroom. She will surely continue and enhance the positive trajectory SVC athletic programs are enjoying for however long she serves in her new role.”

Gowan takes over for Sharief Hashim, the Mountaineers’ outgoing AD who accepted a similar post at SUNY Potsdam effective in July.

“I want to thank President Evans for entrusting me to lead the Athletic Department during this time of transition,” Gowan said. “I am also grateful to have been mentored by Sharief throughout the last year, and I am humbled by how my role has grown during my time at Southern Vermont.”

After getting settled in, Gowan was appointed as SVCs Senior Woman Administrator for the 2017-18 academic year; she will continue to serve in that role, as well as her head coaching role, while leading the Department of Athletics. Gowan also took on the duties of overseeing NCAA compliance and academic standing for the College’s student-athletes, supervising SVC’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and managing the Department’s work study staff.

“I moved to Bennington to coach basketball, and I found a family at SVC along the way,” Gowan added. “I am honored to now have the opportunity to lead our exceptional staff. I hope to support our coaches in leading their teams to continued success—not only in competition, but also in the classroom and community.”

Gowan relocated to Bennington from Los Angeles last spring when she was tabbed as the head of SVC’s women’s hoops squad. In Southern California, she was an assistant women’s basketball coach at Occidental College in conjunction with being a middle school mathematics teacher since July 2015. She received her Master of Arts in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University Irvine in 2013 after obtaining her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 2010 from California State University, Stanislaus.
