12 SVC Student-Athletes Earn 2016 NECC Spring Academic All-Conference Honors

BENNINGTON, Vt. – The New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) announced on Thursday its 2016 Spring Academic All-Conference Team with 12 of its members hailing from Southern Vermont College’s winter or spring squads.

To be eligible for NECC Academic All-Conference honors, a student-athlete must post a minimum grade point average of 3.40 on a scale of 4.00 and must be a sophomore or higher in class standing. Student-athletes who competed in men’s and women’s basketball, men’s volleyball, baseball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, softball, and men’s tennis were eligible for spring NECC academic honors.

"The role of the student-athlete is a challenging one that demands dedication to one's studies, as well as one's sport," observed Jay White, SVC’s Provost and Dean of the College. "But, for our student-athletes at small Southern Vermont College, the role is one that touches and lifts every single member of the SVC community. We all appreciate our student-athletes' commitment to success and celebrate today the recognition by the NECC of 12 Mountaineers selected as members of the Conference's All-Academic Team --- eight of those Mountaineers collecting the honor for at least a second time in their years at SVC."

Southern Vermont was represented on the Academic All-Conference Team by every league-sponsored winter or spring sport offered by the College this year, the first time that has happened since 2011.

"We take great pride in the competitive success of our athletic programs,” added SVC Director of Athletics Michael McDonough. “But it is all the more rewarding when so many of our student-athletes are recognized for their academic achievement. Their academic performance reinforces the NCAA Division III ideal of the ‘student-athlete.’"

Of the eight Mountaineers who are being honored once again for academic achievement, four are doing so for at least the third time in their careers. Women’s lacrosse junior captains Emily Lesure (Cheshire, Mass.) and Lauren Nesshoever (Chittenden, Vt.) are both grabbing the award for the fourth time in their careers after transferring to SVC for their sophomore seasons; Nesshoever has collected two fall honors for women’s soccer and one spring accolade for women’s lacrosse while Lesure has made the previous two fall NECC teams as a representative of Southern Vermont’s women’s volleyball and then women’s cross country crews.

Senior Karina Meza (Los Angeles, Calif.) represented the SVC softball team on this year’s spring listing after making two fall Academic All-Conference teams as a member of the College’s women’s soccer squad. Junior women’s lacrosse captain Mel Orrell (Gloucester, Mass.) is also reeling in her third career laurel after garnering one in both the fall and spring of last year- her fall award coming as a representative of the women’s soccer team.

Among the four Mountaineers who picked up the accolade for the first time in their collegiate careers, two – women’s basketball captain Amber Flagg (Windsor, Conn.) and baseball captain RJ Pingitore (Perth, N.Y.) – were seniors who raised their GPA enough to make the team in their final undergraduate semester.

A total of 184 student-athletes from across the Conference earned their way to the 2016 spring list.
