Manzo Earns NECC POW Honors

BENNINGTON, Vt.- Alicia “Lefty”  Manzo was recognized as the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) player of the week for the week October 17-23. Manzo led the Mountaineers to another undefeated week as the Mountaineers went 3-0. Manzo, a junior opposite from Clovis, California and the Mountaineers are riding an 18 match win streak and a 39 consecutive set win streak.

A week ago the Mountaineers earned NECC victories over Lesley University on Wednesday and Mitchell College on Saturday. Southern Vermont also beat Mitchell College 3-0 in a non- conference match, Saturday afternoon.

For the week, Manzo put up outstanding numbers, as the junior hit .426. She connected on 25 kills and served the Mountaineers to nine aces. Also, in the conference match against Mitchell College, the California native had five blocks.

“Lefty stepped up in a moment when her team needed someone to rise to the occasion. She has stayed at the top of her game all season, and has been an essential source of consistency that has led us to success,” said Head Coach Josh Stokes.

Manzo is the third Mountaineer to earn an NECC weekly honor, and it is the third straight week a Mountaineer has been honored. Two weeks ago Jessica Alvarez earned AVCA National Player of the Week and this past week Danielle Healis earned NECC Player of the Week.

Manzo leads SVC in service aces with 80 in 2011. She also has a third best 212 kills, .313 hitting percentage, and 65 assists for the 27-2 Mountaineers. Southern Vermont needs one win this week in order to clinch home court advantage throughout the NECC playoffs. Manzo and the Mountaineers will look to improve the school best 27-2 record at Bay Path College, Wednesday, and Daniel Webster College, Saturday.
