Alvarez Earns Second Straight NECC Player of the Week Honors
BENNINGTON, Vt.- For the second time in as many weeks, Southern Vermont College Women’s Volleyball player, Jessica Alvarez was named New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) player of the week. Alvarez led the Mountaineers to its 17th win as SVC beat Simmons College 3-0 Thursday evening.
“Jessica’s hard work is really paying dividends in more ways than one. Being selected NECC player of the week two weeks in a row is a great individual honor, but is also a great recognition of her team’s performance,” said Head Women's Volleyball Coach Josh Stokes.
Alvarez recorded a double double for the Mountaineers against Simmons Thursday. She had 14 kills and 17 digs in the match. Alvarez also hit for an outstanding .500 hitting percentage, connecting on 14 kills on 22 total attacks.
For the 2011 season Alvarez has a team leading 250 kills. With this past week’s performance Alvarez also eclipsed the .300 hitting percentage mark as she now sits with a .302 hitting percentage. Alvarez has also been a major part of the Mountaineers incredible defensive play in 2011, with 163 digs and 22 blocks.
Alvarez and the Mountaineers will open conference play Tuesday night at Becker College, at 7:00PM. The Mountaineers are 17-2 in 2011, the best record for any Women’s team in Southern Vermont College history.
