Alvarez Player of the Year, Hogue Defensive Player of the Year, Stokes Coach of the Year

BENNINGTON, Vt.- The Southern Vermont Women's Volleyball team continued its success in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Monday afternoon. This time it was with the All-Conference awards. Jessica Alvarez (Eagle Rock, CA) was named NECC Player of the Year, as Joanna Hogue (Los Gatos, CA) was named Defensive Player of the Year. Head Coach Josh Stokes was also named the NECC Coach of the Year.

Alvarez a junior outside hitter led the Mountaineers with a program best 399 kills. She led the conference with 3.8 kills per set and was only behind teammate Danielle Healis (San Diego, CA) for the best hitting percentage. In conference the junior hit .390 and averaged 3.52 kills per set.

Hogue won the Defensive Player of the Year award for the second straight year. A senior captain for the Mountaineers, Hogue was also named the conference championship MVP. As the libero, Hogue led SVC with 347 digs. She also average 4.0 digs per set in conference matches.

Joined on the first team for SVC was Healis, Alicia Manzo (Clovis, CA), and senior captain Hershey Canta(Bataan, Philipines). Healis led the conference with a .490 hitting percentage, against conference opponents. In 2011, the San Diego native hit an outstanding .409. Manzo a junior opposite was also a key piece to SVC. The left-hander had 244 kills and 93 aces from the service line. Canta was the one who set them all though. The senior set a program mark with 772 assists.

Stokes earned the Coach of the Year honor in just his second season at SVC. The second year coach took over a program that went 1-21 the year before he arrived. In just two seasons Stokes turned the Women's Volleyball program into a regional ranked team and went 31-2. SVC also went undefeated in conference play this year, and didn't drop a single set.

Southern Vermont will play in the NCAA tournament this weekend. SVC will travel to Clarkson University for the New York regional. In its first round game the Mountaineers will take on Cortland St. (37-1) at 5:30PM.
