SVC Volleyball Sweeps Bay Path and Becker in NECC Tri-match
BENNINGTON, Vt. – The Southern Vermont College women’s volleyball team swept a New England Collegiate Conference tri-match Saturday, October 16th, at the MAC. The Mountaineers fended off the Bay Path College Wildcats 3-0 in the first match of the day, BPC defeated the Becker College Hawks 3-1 in the middle match, and SVC swept BC 3-0 to finish the sweep.
The Mountaineers improved to 12-5 overall and 4-1 in the NECC. The wins clinch a spot for SVC in the NECC playoffs in November. Becker fell to 7-16 overall (0-3 NECC), while the Wildcats improved to 7-9 (2-2 NECC).
Southern Vermont College 3, Bay Path College 0
Southern Vermont came out strong in the first match, walking past Bay Path 25-18, 25-19, and 25-11. Junior outside hitter Ashliy Veliz had a match-high 13 kills (.286) and a match-high 12 digs. Junior setter Hershey Canta led with a match-high 26 assists and she also served up four aces from the service line.
Bay Path was led by freshman outside hitter Kate Bartels who had three kills. Bartels and senior Nadine Harkless led the defensive surge for the Wildcats as they each finished the match with eight digs each respectively.
The Wildcats hurt themselves on the serve receive as they tallied 15 errors. The Mountaineers were converting aces but they also tallied 13 uncharacteristic errors from the service line. SVC hit a solid .214 in the match.
Bay Path College 3, Becker College 1
Harkless and the Wildcats eked out their seventh win on the year as they defeated the Hawks with sets of 23-25, 25-22, 26-24, 26-24 in the middle match. Harkless had a team-high nine kills, while Bartels added four on the attack. Sophomore Ashley Provost led the Wildcats with 13 assists and 18 digs, in what turned out to be a defense driven match. Senior Davi Chuong, Bartels, and Harkless each tallied 17 digs in the contest. The Wildcats tallied 89 digs compared to the Hawks 96.
The Hawks were led by sophomore Nicole Morse who had a match-high 10 kills. Senior setter Kelsea Laubenstein had a match-high 28 assists for the Hawks. Sophomore Julie Trcka led the match with 24 digs, while freshman Caitlin DiLorenzo (19 digs), freshman Katelyn Burns (18 digs), and Laubenstein (16 digs) where not far behind.
Southern Vermont 3, Becker College 0
The Mountaineers cruised past the Hawks with sets of 25-20, 25-18, and 25-15 to close out the day. Canta had a match-high 18 assists and Veliz led all hitters with 11 kills. Canta also led all with 14 digs. Junior Joa Claircius had a solid match as she tallied eight kills. Junior Joanna Hogue finished with 11 digs and four aces.
Morse led the Hawks with four kills and Laubenstein had nine assists. Freshman Jacqueline Chila, Burns, and Laubenstein each tallied nine digs leading Becker on the defensive side.
The Mountaineers converted 17 aces from the service line, to the Hawks four.
Southern Vermont looks to extend its winning streak to four games when it travels to Castleton State College Tuesday, October 19th. The match is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start.
